The alcohol in modern fuels does cause it to burn cleaner it can be detrimental to older fuel systems. Lead is needed to protect compounds in the fuel valves and without it, old engines can suffer serious damage and wear. More performance oriented cars that are driven harder can really use the lead additive. There are additives that can be added to the fuel to simulate the effects of lead in the fuel (but still meet emissions requirements). Most of these cars run best on pure gasoline, not gasoline treated with ethanol. Because of that, there are tons of old cars still cruising the roads, without hardened seats, running on unleaded gasoline without issue.
